What is coaching?

Coaching is proving to be the best and most effective approach to employ when offering help to AD/HD sufferers. The reason for this is simple. Coaching is not a form of therapy. Most research studies show that traditional forms of therapeutic intervention do not prove to be all that effective or even helpful for people with AD/HD.

AD/HD Coaching is something different, but not so different from what our concept of a coach is already. Coaches instruct and practice new behaviours with you. They support you while you're in the process. Coaching basically offers an opportunity for better achievement through skill development, practice, and encouragement.

How Does Coaching Work?
Coaching works because it is essentially a form of behaviour modification. Quite often the life-long symptoms of AD/HD, result in a lack of sustainable concentration, and a pattern of avoidance for what may appear to be an overwhelming request. Distractibility and impulsivity, coupled with disorganisation, can easily result in so many lost opportunities, low productivity, feelings of low self-confidence, vulnerability, depression, and performance anxiety.

AD/HD Coaches can help to eliminate the negative effects of living with feelings of chronic underachievement by offering a handful of better techniques and practices. Coaching becomes an effective mutual agreement that works toward effective change: a better attitude, new skills, and renewed self-confidence.

Why Coaching Helps AD/HD
Some people with AD/HD feel overwhelmed every time they approach a task. This strong feeling may delay effort, yet be no indication of skill. Yet for many with AD/HD this perception may continuously serve as a real block to getting things done.

Coaches understand the condition of AD/HD, and how to effectively work with it to improve skills and results. A Coach may need to begin by helping the client to identify negative habits and the use of negative language that they use about themselves reinforces perceptions and strong feelings. A new way of approach and a new language to describe efforts can replace old attitudes and feelings with a more positive internal dialogue that embraces and supports change.

The Coach Relationship A coach will always encourage you to be the best that you can be, because first and foremost, they are deeply invested in your success. The Coaching relationship is meant to be an equal partnership, designed to educate and empower both the Coach and the client.

To begin Coaching, we must achieve clarification of the client's stated goals and personal requirements. An assessment is done to assess a client's current suitability for coaching. If for some reason Coaching is not recommended, information and or a referral may be offered.

In agreement a plan of action and a contract is designed between client and Coach, which will include the state objectives, methods to be utilised, responsibilities, fees, and time schedule.

Coaching is an active experience with no predetermined length of time given other than that which is determined between client and coach.

Who Can Benefit from Coaching?
Coaching can be beneficial to anyone. Some people with AD/HD have achieved an incredible degree of external success, and yet privately they still suffer from a deep internal struggle around issues of competency, self-awareness, and effectiveness.

Coaching as a technique can result in a real transformation of the self, helping to eliminate the most common AD/HD problems, which are: Personal Achievement, Personal Perception, and Interpersonal Skills.
